CDM2008: Design Research

Design research turns questions about people, contexts, and experiences into evidence that can guide responsible design decisions. This course introduces a systematic process for framing research, selecting qualitative methods, conducting fieldwork, synthesizing findings, and communicating actionable insights.

Oct. 02 Stage 2: Planning & Stimuli

Week 5: Consultation Session Checking Comparison Conditions and Stimuli

Opening Questions

Does the proposed comparison actually answer the research question?
Is the intended design difference visible in the stimuli?
What must be revised before the team invests further effort in production?

Learning Goal

Use instructor consultation to validate and revise the research idea, comparison conditions, and initial stimuli before full stimuli development.

In-class Activity

Class Format:
- Team consultation session; no separate full lecture
- Each team receives a focused consultation while other teams continue revising their materials
Bring to Class:
- Revised RQ and focal design mechanism
- Baseline and A/B or A/B/C comparison table
- Side-by-side initial stimuli for every condition
- Two or three specific questions or decisions requiring feedback
Consultation Focus:
- Research gap–RQ–condition alignment
- Baseline fairness and relevance
- Visibility of the intended design difference
- Controlled factors, confounds, and feasibility
- Scope of the next stimuli-development step
In-class Output:
- Consultation Decision Log with Keep / Revise / Test Next decisions
