CDM2008: Design Research

Design research turns questions about people, contexts, and experiences into evidence that can guide responsible design decisions. This course introduces a systematic process for framing research, selecting qualitative methods, conducting fieldwork, synthesizing findings, and communicating actionable insights.

Week 13: Data Analysis #1 Qualitative Insights

Opening Questions

What recurring meanings or patterns appear across participants’ responses?
How can individual codes become themes without losing the supporting evidence?
How does each emerging theme answer or complicate the research question?

Learning Goal

Organize and code qualitative data, develop evidence-supported themes, and connect emerging patterns back to the research question and comparison conditions.

In-class Activity

In-class Lecture:
- Evidence units, descriptive codes, categories, and themes
- How to use supporting, contradictory, and anonymized participant evidence
In-class Activity:
- Check data readiness and anonymization
- Conduct first-cycle coding and build a shared codebook
- Develop 2–4 preliminary themes with supporting and contradictory evidence
- Connect each theme to the RQ and comparison conditions
In-class Submission:
- Qualitative Pattern Board · one per team · before class ends
